comprising nearly 300 individual pages as individual works of art, composing together a unique work of book art. Titled CODEX AUTUMNALIS by artist on title page and dated 19 PAZDZIERNIK 1960 r., WARSZAWA. Most drawings mixed media: ink and pen and ink, watercolor, some gouache. Endpapers and flyleaves also decorated, back endpaper with an inscription to Wszystko, signed ZBIGNIEW MAKOWSKI 19-22 X 1960. Original German volume, a book of human anatomy, paginated to 595 pp. Sold as-is. Overall in distressed condition, most likely intended by the artist. Spine detached; cover boards affixed to spine with wire; some pages loose and repaginated; original cloth covers removed.

LOT NOTES
The exhibition of Makowski's works in 1963 took place at the Miami Museum of Modern Art, located at North Bayshore Drive in Miami on Biscayne Bay. The museum was owned by the eccentric millionaire and art collector from Philadelphia, Bernard Davis. Davis had a keen eye for exceptional modern art, and was also an early patron of Arshile Gorky.
