LOT NOTES
Lev Yudin was a Russian (Soviet) avant-garde painter and graphic artist. Between 1919-1922 Yudin studied at the Vitebsk Arts-Practical Institute under Vera Yermolayeva and Kazimir Malevich, where he was a member of the Malevich-led UNOVIS group along artists like Lissitzky and Suetin. In 1922, Yudin and other core members of UNOVIS moved to Petrograd and studied in VKhUTEMAS-VKhUTEIN (1922-23). The following year, Yudin becomes the chief of the graphic arts department at GINChUK (where his colleagues include Tatlin, Matyushin, and Punin). In the late 1920s and 1930s, Yudin is active as a book illustrator - his signature cut-out silhouettes are featured prominently in this book. Paper was one of his passions: Yudin crafted paper sculptures and designed pop-up books with Yermolayeva, as well as made engravings, throughout the late 1930s.
