LOT NOTES
Alexander Soloviev was a revolutionary in the 19th Century who attempted to assassinate Tsar Alexander II on the morning of April 20, 1879. His attempt failed and was consequently executed by the way of hanging. The portrait was painted in the same year. One can infer from Soloviev’s expression and the clothes that the painting depicts him imprisoned after the assassination.

Makovsky expertly portrayed the emotional state of the painting’s subject - this portrait is of gray and brown tones, allowing us an intimate look at Soloviev’s inner resignation after the failed assassination attempt. Portrait of a Revolutionary Alexander Soloviev comes from the collection of E.V. Smirnov, who is very likely the son of the Russian Academic style painter Vasily Sergeyevich Smirnov, a contemporary of Makovsky. Both Makovsky and Smirnov attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, of which Makovsky’s father was a founding figure. The present lot was exhibited at Paintings by Russian Masters of the Second Half of 19th Century at the Scientific-Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, in Leningrad, 1951.
