LOT NOTES
Victor Paul Joseph Dargaud was born in Paris, and was an active participant at the Salons in Paris between 1873-1885. He was known for his exceptionaly well composed and detailed views of Paris, Marseille, and other cities. Today, his paintings are highly prized for their exceptional and historically accurate details of a transforming Paris, much of which looks radically different today. Another of Dargaud`s paintings of views of Montmarte, The Construction of Sacre-Coeur, Montmartre, sold for $46,875 including premium at Sotheby`s, New York, on November 8, 2012 (lot 2). Dargaud`s fondness for painting Montmartre, may be explained by the fact that his Paris studio was located at 34, boulevard de Clichy, near to this location.
