LOT NOTES
Vera Landchevsky (1897–1960) was born in Voronezh and spent her youth in Kiev, where she began her formal art education under the guidance of Vladislav Galimsky. She furthered her training in Moscow, studying in the studios of Petr Kelin and Michael Leblan, while also receiving sculpture instruction from Anna Golubkina. Following the 1917 Civil War, she moved to Geledzhik and later to Tiflis, where she attended the Academy of Art. Her journey as an émigré eventually led her through Romania and Berlin before she settled in Paris in 1926.

Upon arriving in Paris, Landchevsky quickly integrated into the local art community, exhibiting regularly at the Salon d’Automne (1931), the Salon des Tuileries (1936), and the Salon des Indépendants (1943). Her professional standing was solidified by a solo exhibition at the Galerie Carmine in 1929 and her inclusion in major international exhibitions of Russian art in Belgrade and Prague during the 1930s. She became highly regarded for her atmospheric Parisian landscapes, delicate still lifes, and insightful portraits, often capturing prominent members of the Russian intelligentsia such as the poet Vladimir Elser and the opera singer Leonid Sobinov.

Landchevsky’s artistic range extended beyond painting; she was also an accomplished restorer and worked in theatre design. While she is most recognized for the figurative works of her Parisian period, her style evolved significantly in her later years as she turned her focus toward abstract painting. Today, examples of her portraiture are held in the collections of the Russian Cultural and Historical Museum in Prague, serving as a testament to her diverse and evolving career within the 20th-century European art scene.
