LOT NOTES
This is an industrial arts masterpiece by Solomon Telingater and Alexander Khlebnikov. Moscow photographer Alexander Khlebnikov had won a number of major statewide competitions, and was a friend of Rodchenko and Stepanova. Like his teacher B. Podluzhskii, Khlebnikov sought to treat photography as an applied art, and is considered one of the pioneers of Soviet advertising photography. The book was published without a statement about the book designer and photographer, yet the attribution of this book to Solomon Telingater with Khlebnikov seems stylistically justified. Telingater continuously experimented with unusual materials in book design found here, was partial to using tabbed constructs and pictograms, and he loved to work on utilitarian books that seemed to inspire this work.

From the late 1930s constructivist elements were hidden due to increasingly repressive monitoring. At this time such productions were safe to play with --- no art policeman would spend time inspecting trade catalogs, and clients could afford an investment into better quality book materials. Consider, for example, Telingater's work Kachestvennaia stal' SSSR (USSR Quality Steel) from 1935, also produced for an industrial customer. This is a beautiful book, worthy of the attribution to the oeuvre of this master designer in later years. OCLC does not locate any copies of this work worldwide.
