LOT NOTES
The present photograph captures Maxim Gorky during a momentous period in his career, dated October 29, 1932. This was the same month as the massive national celebration of his 40th anniversary as a writer, an event so significant that the Soviet government officially renamed his birthplace, Nizhny Novgorod, to "Gorky" in his honor.

The recipient of the inscription, Valery Orekhov, was a contemporary journalist and literary figure. Gorky often used these official IZOGIZ (State Publishing House of Fine Arts) postcards for personal correspondence and presentation after his final return to the USSR earlier that year. The portrait, showing Gorky in a worker’s tunic with his trademark cigarette holder, remains one of the most iconic images of the "Father of Soviet Literature" from the peak of his influence.
