LOT NOTES
Marie Vassilieff was born in the western Russian city of Smolensk and studied in the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg before she moved to Paris. Having situated herself in the vibrant neighborhood of Montparnasse in her early 20s, Vassilieff became heavily involved in the local artist’s circle. She opened her own Academie Vassilieff and subsequently, in 1915, a canteen for starving artists, which attracted Modigliani, Leger, Matisse, Chagall, Braque and Picasso, among others, and earned her a great reputation. In her canteen, artists gathered to enjoy food and wine, and more importantly, each other’s company. This versatile venue almost became a salon in itself, hosting literary and musical evenings and frequent parties.

During this fertile period, Vassilieff worked with a variety of media, including satirical dolls, furniture pieces, drawings, Art Deco posters, and folk and modern paintings. Together with a few other artists, she painted the columns at La Coupole, a favorite gathering spot for artists in Montparnasse. She also exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Independants.

Vassilieff’s own painting style was in turn influenced by primitivism and cubism. Town View with a Horse Carriage, done one year before the artist’s death in 1957, is a landscape painting combining cubist composition, the use of warm and cool color blocks to create light and shadow, and echoing lines and shapes for a sense of foreground, middle ground and background. It is a painting with exceptional mastery of color and space, and represents Vassilieff not as an overly mature artist, but at the apex of her abilities.
