LOT NOTES
The above provenance is listed in the note of Francis S. Borton, the Curator of the Mission Inn Galleries, who aided Frank Miller in his acquisiton of paintings in Europe for the collection of the Mission Inn from 1908-1920. In another typed letter from John Maxwell, who purchased the painting from the Estate of Frank Miller and the Mission Inn in 1957, Mawell refers to an apocryphal provenance for this painting. Namely, that the painting was executed for the Barefoot Nuns of Madrid in 1652, taken to Paris from Madrid in 1807 by Jean Lebrun (husband of Vigee Lebrun), sold to Sir Thomas Baring, and remained in the collection of the Baring family until 1919, when the Earl of Northbrook of the Baring family, sold the painting to Frank Miller and the Mission Inn. Regardless of the actual provenance of the painting, it is certain that this painting was already in the collection of Frank Miller and the Mission Inn as of the 1920s, and was exhibited at the Spanish Wing. The 1957 letter from Maxwell also notes that the Chief Art Restorer from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a "Mr. Anton", viewed the work and restored it prior to its acquisition.
