LOT NOTES
Koltsova-Bychkova was a well-known Russian (Soviet) avant-garde painter and graphic artist. Born in Moscow in 1892. In 1912 she enrolled in the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, where she studied under P. Pashkov and graduated in 1916. In 1918-1921 Bychkova studied at VKhUTEMAS from such artists as Aleksandr Osmerkin, Nikolai Ulyanov, Aleksandr Vesnin and Stanislav Noakovsky. She earned her living by creating embroideries which were later exhibited in Russia (1919) as well as in France (1929). In the 1920s Bychkova took an interest in ballet and herself became an amateur dancer. She then began designing scenery and costumes at various theaters. In 1924-1926, unable to find other work, Bychkova founded and managed an embroidery studio — works of this time period are remarkable for their colorful, avant-garde designs. In 1928-1932 Bychkova worked in Paris, studying French art and refining her own style. After the success of her first personal exhibition, Bychkova became a successful commercial artist, designing, among other things, a sports collection for the Hermes fashion house. At this time, Bychkova realised her talent as a painter, creating an extensive series of artworks about Paris and its people. Her works were exhibited, among other places, at the Salon des Automne and the Salon des Independants (where several of her works were purchased by impressionist Paul Signac). In 1932 Bychkova returned to Moscow, where he focused on painting: Moscow cityscapes as well as villages, portraits of her loved ones and vibrant still lifes. Although her art was frequently overshadowed by that of her husband, sculptor Sergei V. Koltsov, interest in her works has grown tremendously in recent years, as evidenced by acquisitions by established museums (such as the State Tretyakov Gallery) and private collectioners alike.

PROVENANCE INFORMATION
This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
