LOT NOTES
Know for his distinct and expressive metal sculptures , John Chamberlain (born in 1927 Rochester, Indiana), is one of the most prominent American sculptors of the XX century. Chamberlain's groundbreaking work challenged traditional notions of sculpture and explored new possibilities in materials, form, and aesthetics. Through his distinctive assemblages of crushed automobile parts, he breathed life into discarded objects, transforming them into powerful statements.
After graduating from Art Institute of Chicago (1951ñ52) and then at Black Mountain College in North Carolina (1955-56) Chamberlain moved to New York in 1956 where he got immersed in the evolving abstract expressionism†movement and embraced unconventional material - discarded automobile parts. He sourced his materials from wrecking yards, junkyards, and scrapyards manipulating them into expressive and dynamic compositions. "The definition of sculpture for me is stance and attitude. All sculpture takes a stance. If it dances on one foot, or, even if it dances while sitting down, it has a light-on-its-feet stance. What I do doesnít look like heavy car parts laid up against a wall." The Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas
Later in life, seeking a larger studio space Chamberlain moved from New York to Sarasota, Florida where he met Sue Ellen and Jack†Crawford, who became his friends and Jack became his studio assistant for ten years. The sculpture Chief Kokomoko
was gifted to Jack Crawford. Being from Kokomo, Indiana, Chamberlain called him "Kokomoko"
