LOT NOTES
Though best known as a critical figure within the Cubist movement, Jean Metzinger worked in a plethora of styles: from his early Seurat-influenced Divisionism to his later Purist-inspired forms, Metzinger continually expanded his repertoire. Meitzinger did not view such experiments as a departure from Cubism, writing in 1922: I know works whose thoroughly classical appearance conveys the most personal, the newest conceptions... Now that certain Cubists have pushed their constructions so far as to take in clearly objective appearances, it has been declared that Cubism is dead [in fact] it approaches realization. Indeed, Jeune Femme Pensive exhibits decidedly-Cubist features — a compressed, vertical plane with (albeit comparatively slight) modulations in perspective — and presents yet another variation on the "Absinthe Drinker" scene, while simultaneously recalling the monumental, rounded forms of Metzinger's contemporary and friend Fernand Leger.
