LOT NOTES

This expansive maritime scene is a masterclass in Jack Lorimer Gray’s ability to render the raw industrial power of mid-century shipping. The composition features a rust-streaked ocean-going tanker navigating a rolling, deep-emerald sea, accompanied by a hard-working tugboat in the foreground. Gray, who famously lived aboard boats for much of his life, imbues the scene with an atmospheric authenticity; the low-hanging clouds and the hazy sunlight filtering through the masts suggest the bracing, salt-sprayed air of the North Atlantic.

The painting showcases Gray’s characteristic "seaman’s perspective." Unlike many marine artists who painted from the safety of the shore, Gray captured the ocean from the waterline. The tugboat is shown pitching in the trough of a swell, its dark hull contrasting sharply against the frothing whitecaps. The tanker itself is rendered with meticulous technical detail, from the intricate rigging of its derricks to the subtle plume of dark smoke trailing from its funnel, signaling a vessel under full steam.

Executed with a confident, rhythmic brushstroke, the work balances the massive, static weight of the vessels against the fluid, unpredictable energy of the water. The palette is a sophisticated arrangement of industrial ochres and greys set against the vibrant, shifting blues of the deep sea. This specific subject matter - the interaction between large commercial vessels and the tugs that guide them - was a hallmark of Gray’s highly successful New York and Atlantic coastal series, which remains his most sought-after period among collectors.

Works of this scale and quality highlight why Gray was the maritime artist of choice for prominent collectors, including President John F. Kennedy. This painting serves not only as a dramatic artistic statement but as a historical record of the rugged beauty of the 20th-century maritime industry, captured by an artist who lived and breathed the sea.
