LOT NOTES
By 1877, Ivan Turgenev, then living in permanent "semi-exile" in Paris at 50 Rue de Douai, had become the unofficial ambassador of Russian letters to the West. During the winter of 1876–1877, a young Sergei Taneyev - Tchaikovsky’s favorite pupil and later known as the "Russian Bach"", was a rising star of the Moscow Conservatory and arrived in Paris to broaden his musical horizons. Taneyev was introduced into the elite "Viardot Circle," the salon of the celebrated singer Pauline Viardot, where Turgenev was a constant fixture. Turgenev, though a man of words, was deeply immersed in the musical world through his lifelong devotion to Viardot.

Records indicate that Taneyev performed at these salons, and Turgenev was famously impressed by the young pianist's intellect and technical mastery. This photograph, inscribed in January 1877, was likely a parting gift or a token of esteem presented to Taneyev toward the end of his Paris residency.
