LOT NOTES
Igor Samsonov is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Russian painting, celebrated for his richly imagined figurative compositions that fuse classical technique with surrealist and psychological undertones. Born in Voronezh, Russia, in 1963, Samsonov’s trajectory as an artist has been shaped by a deep reverence for the Old Masters, combined with a modern introspection that renders his work both timeless and startlingly current. Trained initially in mathematics, Samsonov later redirected his life toward painting, graduating from the prestigious Ilya Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in St. Petersburg-one of Russia’s foremost academies for classical art. This rigorous academic foundation is evident in the painterly discipline, refined detail, and compositional balance that characterize his canvases. But Samsonov’s art does not dwell in nostalgia. Rather, he uses the technical rigor of classical training as a platform to explore complex emotional landscapes, symbolic worlds, and subtle social commentary.
In  Allegorical Nude Samsonov delivers a compelling fusion of classical technique and symbolic mystery, reflecting his signature style that weaves psychological depth with art historical reverence. At the center of the composition is a serene, red-haired female figure, her gaze turned contemplatively to the side as she holds a bird with reverent care. Her semi-nude form, draped modestly with white cloth, evokes the timeless tradition of the muse or goddess, yet she is not presented as a passive object of beauty. Instead, she radiates calm authority—an agent of mystery whose gesture and expression invite interpretation. On her head rests a folded white cloth in the shape of an avian figure, further deepening the symbolic layering. The setting is lush and dreamlike: a backdrop of stylized foliage and a luminous sky rendered with a kind of theatrical stillness, suggesting that the scene unfolds not in a literal world but in a suspended, psychological or mythical space. His mastery of light and form conjures associations with the Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite traditions, yet the mood is unmistakably modern-quiet, internal, and symbolically charged. Created in 2007, this work belongs to a mature period in Samsonov’s career, when his compositions became increasingly allegorical, introspective, and formally refined. It exemplifies his ongoing exploration of myth, identity, and inner experience, engaging the viewer not with narrative clarity but with open-ended, poetic ambiguity.
