LOT NOTES
French painter Francoise Gilot forged a remarkable eight-decade career defined by lyrical color, elegant draftsmanship, and unwavering independence. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, she studied at the Sorbonne and the British Institute in Paris before debuting in a solo Paris exhibition in 1943.

Gilot shared a celebrated but turbulent decade-long relationship with Pablo Picasso (1943-1953) yet steadfastly pursued her own vision - blending abstraction, myth, and memory in acclaimed series such as Labyrinth. Relocating between Paris, New York, and La Jolla, she married scientist Jonas Salk in 1970 while continuing a prolific international exhibition career.

Her paintings are held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and Centre Pompidou. Gilot died in New York at age 101, remembered as a pioneering modernist who refused to be defined by anyone but herself.

Elizabeth Hubbard (December 22, 1933 – April 8, 2023) was an American actress best known for her long and celebrated career in daytime television. Born in New York City to Elizabeth Wright Hubbard (a pioneering physician and homeopath) and Benjamin Alldritt Hubbard, she was raised in an intellectually rich environment. She attended Radcliffe College, graduating summa cum laude in 1955, and thereafter studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she became the first American awarded the school’s silver medal.

Hubbard made her Broadway debut in 1955 and went on to appear in a number of productions. She entered television in the early 1960s, with roles on Guiding Light and The Edge of Night, before landing her signature role as Dr. Althea Davis on The Doctors (1964-1969, 1970-1977, 1981-1982). Her portrayal in 1974 earned her the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

In 1984, she began portraying Lucinda Walsh on As the World Turns, a role she inhabited until the show’s conclusion in 2010. She received multiple Daytime Emmy nominations for this role and became one of daytime’s most memorable characters.
