LOT NOTES
The present work is a study for the epynomous mural, executed on the facade of the second floor of El Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma (El Centro Cultural de la municipalidad de Miraflores), in commemoration of the fifth centennial of the discovery of America.

Peruvian artist Fernando de Szyszlo is justly considered one of the pioneers of Latin American abstraction. After graduating from School of Plastic Arts at the Catholic University in Lima, Szyszlo travelled through Europe where he became deeply inspired by Surrealist poets such as Andre Breton and Octavio Paz. After this moment, the artist seeked to depict the indigeneity of pre-Columbian sacred sites in his abstract paintings that often hover on the border between reality and imagination. SzyszloÕs masterful ability to portray the playfulness between light and shadow is apparent in this work and typical of his art. El Encuentro depicts the various surface layers of his native land interrupted by artificial constructive elements- an exploration of contrast between organic and man-made. This work is a study for mural executed on the facade of El Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru. Fernando de Szyszlo shared the centerÕs mission to spread Peruvian culture to every citizen. His choice of location shows SzyszloÕs commitment to his country and desire to proliferate the interest in culture to the masses. Szyszlo passed away in 2017 leaving behind a successful career of an artist exhibited in such prominent institutions as The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
