Description:

ETIENNE ROUDENKO (UKRAINIAN-AMERICAN 1897-1987), "Untitled," oil on masonite, 22 x 28 in. (55.9 x 71.1 cm.), signed lower left. We are grateful to Peter Hastings Falk for the following catalogue essay, "When Jackson Pollock died in 1956 he was the world's most famous drip-action painter. But he was not the first. Etienne Roudenko must be added to the small list of drip-action painters active during this period, and among those who possibly even preceded Pollock. In 1918, Roudenko had been studying art in Moscow before becoming a colonel in the equestrian guards at the Royal Palace of Czar Nicholas II. At the outbreak of the bloody Bolshevik revolution he fled to Paris and continued his studies under the painter, Camille Boiry. But in 1929, pressure from Stalin's spies throughout the city forced him to flee to Bolivia where he studied with Gusmonde Roces. In 1930 he settled in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1959, he immigrated to New York, and it was here that he produced a large series of drip-action paintings to the point of obsession. In Argentina, researchers continue to look for the "missing link" of his abstract paintings from the 1940s and 1950s. Roudenko's drip-action paintings bear the confidence of a sure hand in both technique and composition, and as such represent an extraordinary discovery in the history of 20th century modernism."
