LOT NOTES
Doris Caesar (November 11, 1892 – 1971) was an influential American sculptor known for her powerful, expressionistic portrayals of the human figure, particularly female forms. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Caesar developed an interest in art at a young age, studying initially at the Art Students League of New York under prominent sculptors George Bridgman and Alexander Archipenko.

Caesar’s work often explored emotional and psychological themes, capturing human vulnerabilities and strengths through simplified yet deeply expressive forms. Influenced by modernism and expressionism, she employed bold, tactile surfaces and an abstracted approach to anatomy that emphasized emotional intensity over realistic representation. Her sculptures, typically cast in bronze, depicted figures in dramatic, introspective, and sometimes anguished postures, earning her critical acclaim for conveying complex inner states.

Throughout her career, Caesar exhibited widely and was associated with significant art organizations, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Academy of Design. Her work is represented in numerous museum collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum.
