LOT NOTES:
This certificate was presented to Maria Nikolaevna Bakhmeteva on her departure from Bulgaria, which occurred because her husband, a special envoy/agent from the Russian Court, was called away. Bakhmeteva founded and chaired the Evdokiia Charitable Society, which was devoted to providing medical care for young Bulgarian children. Members of the Evdokiia Charitable Soviety who signed this document include Elena Velcheva, Dr. Boneva, Raina Pavlova, Elene Surmadzhieva, Raina Kermektchieva, and Lidiia Shishmanova., AN ORNATELY CALLIGRAPHIED AND PAINTED CERTIFICATE PRESENTED FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE EVDOKIA CHARITABLE SOCIETY TO THE SOCIETY`S FOUNDER, MARIA MIKOLAEVNA BAKHMETEVA. Presented in Sofia, 22 January, 1906. Cover text calligraphed in Bulgarian, Yeyo visokoprevoskhoditelstvo Mariya Nikolaevna Gospozha BAKHMETEVA osnovatelka i predsedatelka Blagotvoritelnogo druzhestva Evdokia [Her Excellency Mariya Nikolaevna Bakhmeteva, Founder and Director of the Evdokia Charitable Society]. Handwriting, calligraphy, and ornament on heavy paper. Four pages total. Three vignetted watercolor views of Bulgaria. The signature of the artist on the third page bottom, At. Baklarov A long silk bookmark with an embroidered portrait, probably of Bakhmeteva. The certificate is inserted with a presentation leather portfolio, ornamentally painted on the cover and applied with an enamel emblem of the Society of Evdokiia. Size: 375 x 260 mm. Stored in a worn contemporary box.
