LOT NOTES
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia to a family of German origin, Alexander Salzmann studied originally with Franz von Stuck at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts as of 1898, and would later study at Wasily Kandinsky's Phalanx School of Painting, absorbing his teachings as well as those of the Blaue Reiter artists in Munich, especially in the combination of all the art forms such as visual arts, theater, and music. In Munich, he would also become good friends with the composer Thomas de Hartmann, a close collaborator as well of Kandinsky. Salzmann's calling, was for the theatre, and using his talents he became a highly desirable scenographer in Germany. In 1915, Salzmann returned to Moscow, where he worked with Alexander Tirov at the Kamenny Theatre, and where fellow artist Alexandra Exter was designing the costumes and sets. His later travels would bring him to Constantinople and later to France, where he worked as an antique dealer and decorator, before passing away in Leysin, Switzerland at a sanitorium for tuberculosis in 1934. Despite his impressive artistic pedigree, and probably owing to his fanatical devotion to the theatre, existing paintings by Salzmann are quite rare to find, especially of the size, quality, and exceptional lyricism, as the current painting being offered.
