A SET OF 48 EARLY RUSSIAN HANDCOLORED PLAYING CARDS, PRODUCED BY THE IMPERIAL OPRHANAGE WITH GEOGRAPHICAL MAPS OF THE RUSSIAN PROVINCES, FROM THE TIME PERIOD OF ALEXANDER PUSHKIN (1827). Fabr. Imperatorskago Vospitatel`nago Doma, St. Petersburg, 1827, by K. M. Gribanov, copper plate engravings printed on cardboard, gold-edged and stencilled in watercolor, in the French suit system, with full contemporary hand-color, each card measuring 9.7 x 6.5 cm, the face of each card is divided into four compartments, the first having the arms of a Russian province, the second with the suit marks, the third a list of the principal towns and villages of the province, and the fourth a costume figure depicting local dress, the verso of each with a map of the region described on the front, and distances from the two capitals of the province. Described in contemporary sources as "Geographical maps of Russia depicting the coats of arms, costumes and distances from the two capitals for the benefit of young people," this set comprises 47/52 + 1/8 cards, the extra card with the Coat of Arms of Cherkassk and lands/costume of the Don Cossacks. EXTREMELY RARE.
