LOT NOTES
The internationally renown film director Andrey Tarkovsky was an iconic, highly regarded figure in Soviet and international movie industry. He was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for “Ivan's Childhood,” at the Cannes Film Festival Tarkovsky won the FIPRESCI prize four times, the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury three times (more than any other director), and the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury twice. In 1988, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awarded the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film to “The Sacrifice.” In addition, he was twice nominated for the Palme d'Or.

Tarkovsky's movies, saturated with philosophical and humanist ideas, often puzzled Soviet film industry bureaucrats by absence of clear ideological message, but were nevertheless highly valued by Soviet intelligentsia. Highly autobiographical, the film centers on a man’s memories of childhood, adolescence, and adult life, blending personal history with Soviet cultural and political contexts. At its core, Mirror is not a traditional narrative film. It eschews linear storytelling in favor of a fragmented, non-chronological approach. One of the most striking features of Mirror is its innovative use of the cinematic medium to represent the inner workings of memory. The film is composed of long, flowing takes that often seem disconnected from one another, creating an impression of time collapsing in on itself. Memories are not simply recalled but are experienced as vivid, emotional, and often incomplete fragments. Tarkovsky's use of long, uninterrupted shots is integral to his exploration of time and memory, allowing the audience to experience a meditative, almost trance-like state.

Mosfilm produced only a limited number of mimeographed copies of the film, which were either distributed to select libraries or kept in the company’s archives. It was officially released by Mosfilm on May 7, 1975.
