A PAIR OF SOVIET LACQUER KEEPSAKE BOXES WITH SCENES FROM FAIRY TALES BY ALEXANDER PUSHKIN AND AN EPISODE FROM A RURAL LIFE, A. SMIRNOV, MSTYORA, 1940S
each of a rectangular shape with a hand-painted hinged cover and sinopia interior;

one of the boxes features assembled scenes from Ruslan and Liudmila by Alexander Pushkin; depicting the author himself seated by an oak that is entwined by a golden chain, with a learned cat and a mermaid in the branches. On the left side of the tree there are: Leshy, Baba Yaga, Kashey, a Prince capturing a sly king; followed by various scenes painted on the right side of a tree: a wizard carrying a Prince in the sky, a tower where a Princess stays, the thirty knights led by their Uncle emerge from the water on the right. A gilded vegetal motif runs around the black border of the cover and around the body of the box; the bottom bears an inscription Made in the Soviet Union; length: 14.2 cm (5 5/8 in.), depth: 10 cm (3 7/8 in.), height: 4 cm (1 5/8 in.), titled in Cyrillic upper center, signed Smirnov lower right, inscribed with location and dated Mstera 1946g. - XII. lower left

the cover of the other box depicts the scene of the soldiers returning back from a battlefield to their native village, the women meet them with flowers and offer their horses a water from a well; similar to the other box, a gilded vegetal motif runs around the black border of the cover and around the body along the lower edge; length: 17.4 cm (6 7/8 in.), depth: 8.5 cm (3 1/4 in.), height: 4 cm (1 5/8 in.), titled in Cyrillic By the Well upper center, signed Smirnov lower right; inscribed with location and dated Mstera. 1947g XI. lower left
