LOT NOTES
The pair most likely represent the Daoist pairing of the male God of Wealth (Cai Shen) and the female Sovereign of the Clouds at Dawn (Bixia Yuanjun), or, alternatively, the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu) and the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi), the City God, Kitchen God, or Jade Emperor. The pair of sculptures were probably used in devotional practices as rural gods and were placed outside, as indicated by the signs of exposure to the natural elements.
