A HIGHLY INTERESTING ALBUM WITH MORE THAN 400 VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF RUSSIA, GEORGIA, AND CRIMEA, 1899, Compiled by Sir John Evelyn Leslie Wrench in 1889. Album in folio with views of Russia, Georgia, and Crimea. 420 x 310 mm. Contains approximately 440 original photographic plates (120 x 195 mm and smaller), around 70 postcards, and 4 original watercolor artworks, all with hand-written inscriptions. Half-leather binding, gilt embossing on spine, small rubs, restored crack (about 15 mm) on binding between spine and front cover. Great overall condition. A dedication Mother from Evelyn Wrench 27/11/99 is written on pastedown endpaper. The author`s signature, date, and a list of places photographed stated on verso of free endpaper (Ev. Wrench, 1899. Moscow, Voronezh, Vladikavkaz, Kavkaz, Tiflis, Borjomi, Batumi, Yalta, Sevastopol). The pictures show life and folkway of the locals, as well as their markets, roads, landmarks, characters such as merchants, priests, bargainers, peasants, craftsmen, soldiers, and many others. This album is a material of great importance and interest for in-depth knowledge of Russian history of late 19th Century. Photography and album compilation was made by English writer, political activist, editor of various magazines - Sir John Evelyn leslie Wrench (1882-1966). He was knighted in 1932 by George V. During the preparations to dedicate himself to politics, Sir Evelyn Wrench studied foreign languages and visited many countries, including Russia, where the photographs from the album were taken.
