Considered one of the last true representatives of the Russian 20th century avant-garde, Vladimir Sterlingov furthered the development of the Suprematist theory of the additional element and inspired a large group of Leningrad artist known as the Sterlingov Group during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In fact, Sterlingov had studied under Kazimir Malevich during the 1920s at the Leningrad Institute of Artistic Culture (INKhUK), which Malevich himself founded and directed.
