LOT NOTES
Born in Izium in the Kharkov Region of the Russian Empire, Sergei Vasilkovsky studied painting at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under M. Klodt, from 1876-1885. The recipient of numerous medals and awards for his work as a student, Vasilkovsky received a foreign travel stipend in 1885 which allowed him to travel across Western Europe from 1886-1888. Vasilkovsky was noted for his historical and ethnographic paintings, representing figures and scenes from Russian and Ukrainian national history. The current painting, representing a young Ukrainian village girl drawing water with a yoke, with cathedral spires in the distance, is a fine example of Vasilkovsky’s mix of European 19th Century landscape painting, quite similar to Italian paintings of the same period, with a uniquely Ukrainian subject matter.

Estimate: $6,000 – $8,000
