LOT NOTES
According to an assessment of the experts from State Russian Museum, the present lot was painted during the early period of Filonov's artistic career. In 1903-1908 he studied at the studio of L. Dmitriyev-Kavkazsky and visited the Near East among the other places. In his biography, Pavel Filonov states that he brought back around 100 oil sketches, made during his five-year long study. He describes the subjects of his sketches as comprised of bedouins, beggars, fishermen, peasants, gypsies, ladies, old men, children, and landscapes. Dmitriyev-Kavkazsky kept the selected works of his students, brought back from the trips, in his possession until he died in 1916. The works were then acquired by Georgiy Dolukhanov. An existing list of the students' works includes 22 oil sketches by Filonov, no. 15 on the list is described as as: A Man, Arab (Bedouin), oil, 90 x 36, signed P. Filonov 1905 lower right
