PROVENANCE
Collection of Mr. Dolukhanov, Russia. His parents, artists Georgiy Mikhailovich Dolukhanov and Turina-Maria-Aneta Robert Liander attended the studio of L. Dmitriyev-Kavkazsky in the early 1900s together with Pavel Filonov and other students. After their teacher's death, the couple acquired a number of paintings from his collection.

LOT NOTES
Lev Yevgrafovich Dmitriev was born in the Caucasus, and therefore later chose to add Kavkazsky to his last name in order to distinguish himself from the other artists bearing the same surname. Known for his etchings and drawings, the artist studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he was honored with multiple silver medals for his exceptional work. Later on, Lev Yevgrafovich became a 1st Rank Artist and an Academic. He was a part of the editorial teams of Lastochka and Vsemirnaya Illustratsiya magazines in the 1880s, and one of the founders of Tovarishestvo Russkikh Illustratorov in 1887. Dmitriyev-Kavkazsky travelled extensively to the Caucasus, Transcaspia, Central Asia. The present lot was painted during one of these trips. The artist also taught a group of students at his studio, amongst them were Filonov, Avilov, Aspit, Dobuzhinsky, and Kuprin.
