Jacob Eichholtz was a well known portrait painter of prominent Philadelphians and national figures in the early 19th Century. His portraits included those of Chief Justice John Marshall and Nicholas Biddle, President of the Second Bank of the United States. This painting by Eichholtz depicts Mrs. Belle Cohen of Philadelphia. A prominent Jewish member of Philadelphia society, Mrs. Cohen was responsible along with several other women for setting up the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society in 1819, of which she was the second directress. Still in existence to this day, the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society is the oldest Jewish charitable organization in continuous existence in the United States.
