Born in Valkenberg, Carl Quaedvlieg was a Dutch painter who specialized in painting Roman genre scenes and landscapes with animals. Having studied art in Anvers and Dusseldorf, Quaedvlieg settled in Rome as of 1853, where he would live and work for the rest of his life. His paintings were known for their idyllic and atmospheric depictions of Roman town and country.
