AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF NEARLY 300 COSTUME DESIGNS BY GEORGIY MARKOVICH ORLOV (RUSSIAN 1906-1970), ALONG WITH PERSONAL EFFECTS

comprising:

a) 47 colored pencils and gouache designs on paper for Hello, Dolly by Michael Stewart, approximate size: 21 x 30 cm (8 1/4 x 11 3/4 in.)

b) 17 colored pencils and gouache designs on paper for Busybody by Jack Popplewell, approximate size: 26 x 36 cm (10 1/4 x 14 1/8 in.)

c) 30 colored pencils and gouache on paper mounted on cardboard for Khanuma by Avkentsiy Tsagareli, each: 26 x 33 cm (10 1/4 x 13 in.)

c) 56 colored pencils and gouache designs on paper, presumably for Masquerade by Mikhail Lermontov, approximate size: 30 x 41 cm (11 3/4 x 16 1/8 in.)

d) 50 miscellaneous graphite and colored pencil designs on paper, approximate size: 22 x 32 cm (8 5/8 x 12 5/8 in.)

e) over 100 miscellaneous pencil designs and sketches on paper, approximate size: 24 x 35 cm (9 1/2 x 13 3/4 in.)

f) Personal documents and photographs, including: 29 photographs, 17 reviews copied from local newspapers and recommendation letters, 2 theatre program pamphlets, and various handwritten notes.

LOT NOTES
Gregoriy Markovich Orlov was a well-known theatre costume designer recognized for employing the strong colours and imaginative illustrations. He created designs for the Ashgabat State Russian Drama Theatre, the Odessa Academic Russian Dramatic Theatre, the Lvov Russian Dramatic Theatre, and, most notably, the Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow, among others. In 1953, he became a member of the Ukrainian Artist`s Union.
