oil on canvas

LOT NOTES
The featured lot presents a period copy (possibly by the artist himself) of a portrait depicting the favorite mistress of Charles II of England, Louise Renée de Penancoët de Kérouaille, the Duchess of Portsmouth and Aubigny, by her preferred artist, Henri Gascars. Through his choice of position and sumptuous setting, the composition by Gascars deliberately evokes the sensuous paintings of Venus by Titian and Giorgione. Likewise, by depicting the Duchess tenderly embracing a King Charles Spaniel the artist included an allusion to the Duchess intimate relationships to the sovereign.

Estimate: $10,000 – $15,000

Result: $12,500 (including premium)
