Shapiro Auctions, located on the Upper East Side in New York, NY was established in 2007. The house conducts multiple sales a year with focuses on European, American, Russian, Latin American, and Asian works of art.

Our auctions feature an impressive selection of fine art, decorative art, rare books, icons, militaria, and other objects from antiquity to the present. Shapiro Auctions advertises globally and has clients all over the world, while providing a rare combination of personal service and the ability to sell their art in the capital of the art world, New York City. In addition to private and auction sales, we provide insurance, estate, charitable donation and fair market appraisals for trusts, museums, attorneys as well as private clients according to the highest standards as acknowledged by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Gene Shapiro, AAA, ISA AM,  President
Gene Shapiro has been President of Shapiro Auctions since 2007.  He is a Board Director and Certified Member of the American Appraisers Association, and an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers..  Prior to founding Shapiro Auctions, Gene started his career in the Contemporary department at Sotheby's, New York before working as a private art dealer specializing in European, American, and Russian artworks.  Gene is a paintings appraiser on Public Television's Antiques Roadshow, which is seen by by more than 9 million television viewers each week (view videos of Gene's appraisals here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/appraisers/gene-shapiro.) In addition, Gene has appeared on the BBC World News and Al Jazeera America news programs as a commentator on the art market.  Gene is frequently called upon by collectors, dealers, and governmental organizations for consultations and appraisals of art, and has lectured on the art market extensively.  A licensed auctioneer, he is the main auctioneer for Shapiro Auctions, and has happily provided his auctioneering services for charitable organizations such as the St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center Charity Fundraiser,  the Celiac Benefit Gala for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, and the Centro de Kabbalah Mexico at the Museo Casa de la Bola in Mexico City. Gene received his BA in art history from the University of Pennsylvania, and has studied art history at the  University of California, Berkeley and Christie's, New York.  Gene speaks English, Russian, French, and Spanish fluently. He lives in Westchester County, New York.

     
     
Alexandra     Alexandra Dubodel, Vice President & Specialist
Alexandra Dubodel received her MA in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and her BA in Art History from Union College, New York. Prior to joining Shapiro Auctions in 2011 Alexandra has been involved in a research capacity with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and has served on the curatorial team for projects executed in institutions in the United States and Europe, including the Berlin Akademie Der Künste, LA MOCA, the Drawing Center in New York, and the Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal among others. Alexandra maintains fluency in Russian & is proficient in Italian. She also works with New York City artists and continues to mount art exhibitions in NYC, and is a member of the AFR NYC Heritage Response Team.

Katerina Blackwood, Specialist
Katerina was born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine, where she studied Art History, Fine Art, and Design. Upon relocating to New York in 2011 Katerina accepted a position as a Director at a gallery, where she worked with notable collections of important Modern and Contemporary Art. In 2013 Katerina started at Shapiro Auctions as an Administrative Director, being responsible for the daily operations of the auction house, from liaising with clients to organizing exhibitions at art fairs, and became an Associate Specialist the following year. She has been closely involved in the research and successful sale of a rare Soviet Agitlak gift set, sold in October 2014, establishing an auction record for the category. Katerina speaks Russian, Ukrainian, English, and German.

Antonina Chunaeva, Director, Consignments & Appraisals
Prior relocating to New York, Antonina gained a broad international education and work experience in Russia, Europe and the United States. Upon receipt of the honorary degree in Management from the Moscow University and another degree in Journalism from the International University, she worked for the Moscow City Administration monitoring the city investment programs to the cultural sector and wrote multiple articles, stories and interviews for a variety of news outlets. After several years of combining business, cultural and writing industries in Moscow and New York, Antonina's passion for knowledge brought her to France, where she successfully completed International Business and Communication program. At Shapiro Auctions, Antonina utilizes her broad expertise to work with company's international clients and to ensure that they receive personalized quality services and a superior experience. Antonina is fluent in Russian, English, and French.

Ben Warner, Photographer
Ben is a photographer and visual artist from upstate New York. After receiving his BFA in Photography from SUNY New Paltz, he relocated to New York City to expand his craft, working as a product photographer for The Evolution Store in SoHo and a camera refurbishment technician for The Impossible Project. After joining Shapiro Auctions, Ben has completely renovated the photography space and editing standards, leading to exceptional color and tonal accuracy in the reproduction of works of art. Ben is also very involved with analogue and historic photographic processes, working as a studio assistant and workshop teaching assistant for the Penumbra Foundation, a non-profit arts and education organization.
