A SET OF TWO RUSSIAN PORCELAIN PIECES

1) Nicholas II Coronation Beaker.  The beaker is also known as the "Bloody Cup" or "Cup of Sorrows" due to the trampling deaths of nearly 1400 people at Khodynka Field in Moscow on May 18th, 1896 attending Coronation festivities where these cups were given as gifts. A rumor that there would not be enough cups to be given out led to a stampede and the ensuing tragic consequences. The beaker is enamel over copper, measures 10.5 cm (4 1/8 in.) in height, has strapwork decoration, gilt rim, an Imperial double-headed eagle on one side and the ciper of Tsar Nicholas II on the other side with the date 1896 below.  It is in good condition with some minor chipping on the rim and small scattered scratches, which is rare as most existing cups are in much worse condition. 2) A painted porcelain easter egg, with floral motifs around the circumference and the initials 'E.K.' on the base, measuring 10 cm (3 7/8 in.) in height.

Estimate: $200 – $400

Result: $390 (including premium)
