A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KAZANSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD IN A SILVER OKLAD WITH ENAMEL APPLIQUES, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1824

Chased and repousse, silver oklad applied with a crown of rays on the haloes and three enamel plaques. With a scrolling leaf border decorated with repeating foliate designs in the corners, and images of standing Saint Elizabeth on the left and the Guardian Angel on the right. The Virgin Mary and Christ Child are depicted in the Western style of painting. Further applied are two raised square enamel inlays surrounded by scrolling garlands in the upper left and right corners, as well as a rectangular title plaque with a double frame in the center of the lower border. Cyrillic maker`s mark of Yakov Mishukov, assayer`s marks of Nikolai Dubrovin dated 1824, Moscow town mark, 84 standard. Egg tempera and gesso on a wood panel, two insert splints on the top and bottom edges, 36.1 x 31.1 cm (14 1/4 x 12 1/4 in.)
