each of a rectangular shape with a hand-painted cover; the hinged cover of one of the boxes features a detailed scene from Pushkin`s Ruslan and Liudmila, depicting Liudmila by a castle on the exotic shores of the Black Sea; an ornate gilded border runs around the black base of the box; red-lacquered interior; length: 13.2 cm (5 1/4 in.), titled lower center, signed lower right, inscribed and numbered lower left; on the other box, the lid hand-painted with various characters from the Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights, with the Tsarevna and her fiance Yelisei in the center of the composition, flanked by the Seven Knights and her father on earlier side; an ornate gilded border runs around the black base of the box; red-lacquered interior; length: 20 cm (7 7/8 in.), signed and dated lower right, numbered and inscribed lower left
